Wray-Talks with John, Owner of Cobs Popcorn!


1.Tell us a little about your journey & what has inspired you to create ‘Cobs Popcorn’?

In 2004 my wife Ravit and I began experimenting in our home kitchen in the Melbourne suburb of Elsternwick with a unique sweet/salty popcorn flavour. We recognised that there was space in the snack food market for great tasting ready-to-eat popcorn. To make our popcorn even better we launched it using 100% Australian grown organic ingredients. Our aim was to create Australia’s first premium ready-to-eat popcorn category.

2. Why did you become certified organic?

Ravit and I were committed to feeding our young family as much organically grown food as possible. Looking after our personal health and caring for the environment were important considerations to our family. It was a natural fit! Certified organic meant delivering the best possible to Australian consumers.

3. What is your business philosophy?

Do everything with integrity. Don’t look for short cuts. Do all you can to make what you produce the best it can be. Lead by example!!

4. Describe a typical day in the life of being the owner of Cobs Popcorn?

6.45 – stretching

7.00 – glass of warm water followed by some supplements. More water!

8.00 – Breakfast

8.30 – walk through the factory and meet with key managers.

9.00 – 5.00 Working on new products, marketing, social media etc. etc.

5. What is one of your favourite certified organic foods?

  1. Cobs Lightly Salted Slightly Sweet Popcorn – biased!
  2. Salt of the Earth

6. Is there a particular recipe you would like to share with our readers?

Cobs Sweet/Salty with a dusting of organic cinnamon, sliced organic banana onto a tray into the oven @ 180 deg. C for 15 min. Smooth & Crunchy

7. What would you say is the best health advice someone has given you?

Try not to eat after dinner – no later than 7.00

1. Tell us a little about your journey & what has inspired you to create ‘Love Tea’?

Love Tea was inspired from a vision to provide people with the highest quality, most therapeutic tea blends available. We wanted the products to have benefits for the consumer while also having a minimal impact on the environment.

Emma had the initial concept back in 2006 while we were studying Naturopathy. At the time, there weren’t many teas on the market that were certified organic and that had been designed by a Naturopath, to be beneficial and specific for health conditions.

Emma’s’ focus was on the therapeutics; the tea design and helping people improve their health, with her knowledge of Naturopathy and herbs. Damien had spent time growing up on a bio-dynamic farm and was passionate about organics, sourcing the highest quality organic ingredients and ensuring that the business operates in a sustainable way.

2. Why did you become certified organic?

We have always used certified organic ingredients as it goes hand in hand with the course we were studying. In 2012 we got all of our products certified, as we wanted to improve our transparency to the customers and clearly communicate what was important to us. That was and still is, to provide tea drinkers with exceptional tea, that is free from chemicals and therefore, is better for the individual’s health. We also wanted to leave the least amount of negative impact on the environment and dealing with certified organic plantations was the best way to ensure less chemicals were being used in the growing / production process

3. What is your business philosophy?

At Love Tea, we skillfully craft, blend and pack each of our products in Australia. We collaborate with growers and small scale cooperatives around the world to fairly source organic ingredients. We thoughtfully design each of our unique products, to ensure optimum therapeutic benefit, exceptional flavour and minimal impact on the environment. We hope our tea inspires you to make time to appreciate the quiet moments, take care of your health, and to share great tea with the people you love.

4. Describe a typical day in the life of being the owners of Love Tea?

Damien and I start the day together with our two little girls, we make a juice have breakfast and get them ready for their day. Damien usually spends most of the day at the warehouse…(if he doesn’t sneak off for a surf) I get into work once I have dropped the girls off for a play. We then spend the day looking after our lovely stockists that we supply. We also spend a lot of the day trying to make sure that all of our blends are in stock and ready to be picked and packed for orders.
Then we also spend a fair chunk of each week hand blending different batches of tea. This includes taste testing, plenty of taste testing!!

We have a bit of a chai ritual at the warehouse were we make chai everyday and test different blends and combinations.

5. What is one of your favourite certified organic foods?

Mine would have to be Quinoa as I find it super versatile, and easy to cook with and it provides such a great nourishment for our girls. Damien’s, would be Mangos and kale and a little Loving Earth chocolate…actually a lot of Loving Earth chocolate! We both feel that certified organic produce has such a better taste to conventionally grown foods that it really is a no brainer so anything organic is normally a winner!

6. Is there a particular recipe you would like to share with our readers?

Here is our favourite way to make chai at home

  • Add 2 teaspoons of chai and half a cup of water to a saucepan and bring to near boil.
  • Simmer for up to 5 minutes
  • Add half a cup of milk of your choice and continue to heat to desired temperature
  • Strain the tea into your favourite mug and sweeten to taste if desired.
  • Enjoy


7. What would you say is the best health advice someone has given you?

Well I know everyone knows this quote but it really is such a good one as it simplifies everything we believe in. If you really think about it, it is so simple and that’s what makes is so good!
