How to avoid genetically modified food
‘I want farmers to produce my food, selecting & growing their own seeds,& not food from a laboratory. GM foods are against everything I stand for.’
Margaret Fulton, Cookbook Author & Chef

Food on your supermarket shelf may contain genetically modified ingredients (GM). What does genetically modified mean? Genes from one organism are transferred across the species boundaries to another.

Gene manipulation can be Round Up herbicide resistant. For example, currently a gene from a soil bacteria, is transferred into soy, corn, canola or cotton seed, to allow farmers to spray Round Up herbicide over the crop without killing the plant.

There is no law that requires the labeling of a product that contains genetically modified ingredients. Products which contain soy, corn or cotton seed could be genetically modified.

Your only guaranteed way to avoid GM ingredients is to choose food that is certified organic.

There are 8 organic certifiers in Australia & over 300 internationally…so look for the logos. Visit www.truefood.org.au to view products which currently use genetically modified ingredients.
